[⚽️] Pink boots everywhere.

G’day!

Australia is through to the next round of the World Cup after scraping by with a 0–0 draw against Paraguay.

Was it a thrilling game? Nope. Will we take it? Absolutely.

Let’s goooo! 🦘⚽️

And while we're on the World Cup, I noticed something that felt very on brand...

Pink football boots. Everywhere.

Nike. Adidas. Puma. New Balance.

All using pink for the same reason:

Visibility.

Which, obviously, I love.

Pink has been part of the JUST Creative brand world since 2007.

It helps us stand the flock out. 🦩

But when everyone uses the same "standout" cue, they start to blend in.

Which is a good reminder...

Standing out not just about being visible.

It's about being distinctive enough to be remembered.

Brand building is about creating mental shortcuts people can recall later, when it actually matters.

That's why colour, mascots, symbols, language, stories, sounds, and repeated associations are so powerful.

And it is also why some of you now think of me when you see a flamingo.

Sorry about that!

Or you're welcome, depending on how you feel about birds in shades.

Anyway...

This idea is the perfect segue into our latest episode of the JUST Branding Podcast, where we're joined by Ulli Appelbaum, globally respected brand strategist, and author of The Science of Brand Associations.

Which is exactly what we tuck into... how to get into the mind of your audience and live rent free using the science of brand associations.

Here's an overview of the episode:

The Science of Brand Associations

Brand builders spend a lot of time thinking about logos, messaging, campaigns, and creativity.

But ultimately, brands live in the mind.

The real question is not just what your brand says...

It is what people remember.

What they associate with you.

And how those mental links influence choice when it matters.

In this conversation, Ulli, Matt and I unpack how brand associations are formed, strengthened, measured, and used to drive real business growth.

We discuss why some brands own clear memory structures while others remain vague, how emotion and storytelling help build associations, and what marketers often get wrong about consistency, distinctiveness, and meaning.

If you want to build a brand that is easier to notice, easier to remember, and easier to choose, this episode gives you a practical look at the science behind brand growth.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • What brand associations are and why they matter
  • How associations form in people's minds
  • Why memory is central to brand growth
  • The link between distinctiveness, meaning, and choice
  • How emotion and storytelling shape brand memory
  • Why consistency is often misunderstood
  • What smaller brands can do to build stronger associations
  • What marketers should measure beyond awareness
  • The habits that separate strong brand builders from weak ones

Join for a practical conversation on what really makes brands stick.

And do check out Ulli's book The Science of Brand Associations — you'll find my praise on the back cover.

Have a great flocking weekend! 🦩

P.S. Here's the TL;DR:

Visibility gets you seen.

Distinctiveness gets you remembered.

And that's how you stand the flock out.
