Why most designers won't last

A provocative title, I know.

But after this conversation with James Martin, I genuinely think this is something the creative industry needs to pay more attention to.

Not to create more fear, but to create more hope.

The reality is, the designers and creatives who build lasting careers are not usually the ones chasing the fastest win, the most attention, or the latest shiny tool.

They are the ones building something deeper...

Reputation.
Craft.
Taste.

And doing it all with care.

In our latest JUST Branding Podcast episode, we unpack what actually creates longevity in the creative industry, especially now that AI and instant design tools are lowering the barrier to entry.

And despite the title, this was a fun, light-hearted "chinwag" about the human side of creativity, the habits, mindset, and care that will allow us to focus on what actually matters. Watch on YouTube.

Who is James Martin?

James is a long-time creative friend, a 2024 Brand Builders Summit speaker, a creative rebel and just quietly, a bit of a cuddly teddy bear. (Don't tell him I said that.)

He is the founder of Made By James, a partner at Lincoln Design Co, a bestselling author, and someone who has built a reputation in this industry by speaking without the BS, doing an epic amount of work, and actually standing for something.

Inside this episode, we get into:

  • Why many designers confuse visibility with credibility
  • What actually builds a strong creative reputation
  • Whether craft is being lost in the age of speed and automation
  • Why taste is still a serious competitive advantage
  • The difference between motivation and care
  • The hidden cost of DIY branding
  • What AI makes easier, and what it can never replace

5 Key Takeaways from the Episode

1. A brand is a recognisable reputation

James frames brand less as a feeling and more as a reputation you intentionally build over time. His view is that reputation gives you more control because it is shaped through integrity, competence, narrative, and community.

2. Reputation reduces risk

A strong reputation makes you a safer commercial choice. People hire you faster, trust you more, and refer you when you are not in the room. That trust compounds, but only if you stay in the game long enough.

3. Craft, taste, and judgment matter more as AI makes execution easier

As tools lower the barrier to making things, the value shifts upstream. Strategy, discernment, taste, and knowing what is worth making become more valuable, not less.

4. Care beats motivation

Motivation is unreliable. Care is what keeps you going when the novelty wears off. The people who last are usually the ones who care deeply about the work, their clients, their growth, and the bigger reason behind what they do.

5. DIY has its place, but shortcuts create β€˜wonky shelves’

James makes the point that doing it yourself can be useful early on to test, validate, and get moving. But speed without thinking creates problems later. The shortcut often costs more in the long run if the foundations are weak.
